GARDENER'S NOTEBOOK

Tenacious Imaginative Gardener: Anne Good

By Jani Gardner

Via a tantalizing tip on their fabled gardens from husband, Mev Good, I asked his wife, Anne, if we might tour their grounds in Tisbury. What an amazing variety of horticulture we viewed, when Anne agreed to our visit!

Their home is situated atop a steep ridge with tree-filled landscaping and complementing gardens surrounding it on all sides. A massive blooming rose purple “Cherry Bells” Campanula sits at the base of their entry steps.

A huge white Kousa dogwood sits at the opposite side of the driveway. At the front door area you will find Santolina, Skimmia, Heather, dwarf Boxwood, Hydrangea, Forsythia, Hinoki Cypress, and dwarf Alberta spruce.

Their driveway entry is filled with colorful, classic, seasonal plantings and trees: dwarf red weeping Japanese maples,Wisteria, Phlox, Asters, Balloon flower, Hellebore, perennial Geranium, Candy Lily, Rhododendron, Broom, Lychnis, Japanese Anemone and Allium.

Two terraced gardens include a marvelous European-inspired garden. Their son, Trevor, has created three spectacular topiaries in this classic garden, which also includes two huge variegated Boxwood. Trevor also found antique cast iron cresting which accents this particular garden.

Close to the house is a small pond with hardy water lillies and an ornamental fountain sculpture, brought by Anne from her native England. Overflowing beds by the driveway are sealed off at the back with a row of sections of the trunk of the tree.

Anne has shouldered the leviathan labor of love necessary to plant and create this Eden. “Trevor dug many of the holes,” tells Anne, “and contributed ideas.” And husband Mev is the Ambassador of the Lawn, not such an easy task either, considering the up and down nature of the landscape of their property.

Beyond the lexicon above, Anne has mastered the secrets of successful shade gardening. Classic examples of this proliferate around the gardens. The lower terrace overlooks paths running down through the woods. These are equally dramatic, seasonal and overflowing.

A veritable fairyland of Daffodils, Hydrangea, Bluebells, Day Lilies, Magnolias, Hosta, Heather, Heuchera, Japanese Maples, Laburnum, Toad Lily, deciduous Azaleas, Jack in the Pulpit, a Dogwood (brought by the birds from the higher levels), and a variety of Ferns.

There are Columbines, many varieties of Viburnum, Primula, Aconitums, Rhododendrons, Heucheras, Leucothoe, Solomon’s Seal, and Astilbe. This enthusiastic garden artist hosts a very special sense of wonder about every facet of this garden aerie in the Tisbury woods.
